We had so much fun at the A Kid Again 5K at King’s Island! I think we look grumpy in that picture because it was just before the start of the race, and it was a little chilly out. Anyway, the race was great! I finished, and that’s all that matters! I know exactly what happened too… I started WAY too fast, way to eager, and my shins started to really hurt about 10 minutes in. I tried to push through, knowing that if I kept going the pain would subside, but I had to slow it way down and of course, fell to the back… the way back.
I made it to 1 mile… and then the 2 mile mark… and my shin pain went away. It was out of nowhere, but I was able to pick up my pace. While walking, I was able to think about how far I’ve already come, the obstacles that I’ve faced, and the victories I’ve celebrated. I had music playing (Britney Spears radio on Pandora, great mix of similar artists!) when the song “Fighter” by Christina Aguilera came on. There was, and still is, something very powerful about this song. Maybe it has to do with everything I’ve been through… my parents divorcing, my teenage pregnancy, my mom passing away, being teased all through my school years, my grandparents passing away. Whatever it is, this song really pushed me, made me go a little faster, and just keep going. It was also an emotional few minutes while this song played, thinking about my mom and grandma and grandpa in heaven. I miss them so much, but I like to think that they were there, cheering me on!
This was our first family 5K, and it’s not our last! This upcoming weekend we are doing the Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge, and I do believe we are signing up for another charity 5K to be held in September (details to come on how you can support us and this GREAT cause!). I love taking part in these events, and even though we are walking, we WILL be running. Trust me. I don’t know when, but we WILL.
For anyone who’s really that curious, I finished second to last. That doesn’t matter though, what matters is that I did my FIRST 5K EVER and FINISHED!
