Yesterday I was pretty sure a sign similar to the one above would be slapped down in front of me, a finger wagging in my face, and a stern face telling me, “No F words on Twitter!”.
The story begins as I crossed the finish line of my first ever 5K race yesterday morning. I was on cloud 9, on that “high” that racers feel. Even though I walked it, I was pumped! If I was physically able, I just might have done cartwheels! After I grabbed a bottle of water, I pulled out my BlackBerry, got on Twitter, and tweeted out for the world:
Fuck yea! Might have been at the end, almost last but I finished my first 5k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you know me on Twitter, you know that I’m not a sailor. I don’t cuss every other word, but I have occasionally said something worthy of the title “Potty Mouth”. I’m an adult, so I know when my word choices can be appropriate and not in a PROFESSIONAL arena. However, when it comes to my personal life, my family and friends know that I will swear/cuss, sometimes out of excitement, sometimes out of anger.
What surprised me after I sent that tweet out was an e-mail that I received from an organization that I played a very small, unpaid, VOLUNTEER part in. The e-mail went something like this:
Mandi, This is ____ from _____. We recently saw on Twitter that you used the F word. Because of the demographics of our organization, we are removing you from our ambassador list.
I kid you not.
I VOLUNTEERED to be an ambassador, and quite honestly, since I took on said role, I didn’t even do anything for the organization! Was my role in the organization so significant that they noticed that tweet, out of almost 10,000 tweets, they noticed that one?
While I am not at a loss, since this was unpaid, the organization is. My personal life and my professional life cross all the time, they UFC cage fight all the time, but they are still separate. Me completing my first ever 5K was not a reflection of my professional life, it was not a reflection of or a sponsored tweet for this organization. It was me, being me.
Had this situation been different, and I had been taking part in a paid ambassadorship or partnership with this organization, and been told the “rules” or etiquette while working with them, perhaps I would have taken more caution when tweeting. The thing is, this was said on my own time, not company time. This was at 9 something in the morning, on a Saturday, when the rest of the world was sleeping or making breakfast.
So, so what, I said “The F Word”. Was it REALLY THAT BAD?
Edited to add some information:
Thanks to a commenter, I went and checked out CurseBird… real time swear words on Twitter. Here is a screen shot of the results it pulled up for me:
Three times… and the first two times I apologized! One was after the 2010 Olympics hockey game, the other during the 2010 Grey’s Anatomy season finale (just three days ago), and then yesterday’s post-5K tweet. And since the organization didn’t clarify, they could be referring to the Grey’s-related tweet, or the post-race tweet. Either way, does either reflect on them? Was either sponsored?

Mandi, this really does surprise me. I can’t believe that a company would follow your every move. And like you said it was NOT said in a bad fashion towards them. I guess the word DOES offend some people and to them I say… unfollow, don’t read, etc. I will not give up being ME to please someone ELSE!

You were not out of line in the least. I would have said the same thing, you did something remarkable and something to be proud of and say the F word for. It’s not like you are an avid F bomb dropper. Is this a cop out for them? Either way it’s a ridiculous act by them and go you!

I think this is a really interesting topic. Had the organization made clear of how you are expected to act as a representative of them and you violated it, I would agree. However, seeing that you were not told what to expect, I feel like it could be a violation of your personal privacy.
Its one way to act as a liaison of a company, on their time or on their dime, but another to act like an adult in your own private life.
This is the whole blurry line between public and personal information and how its used.
I def think company #fail for not laying proper groundwork.

Speaking as a social media professional I can honestly say those people sound like assholes.
Wow. Just wow. I find it hard to believe that they would follow every volunteer or employee around 24/7 to make sure they never utter a naughty word.

I think if curse words were used in context with whatever organization the ambassadorship was for, I could see where it would be a problem for them.
I personally don’t find any curse words automatically offensive, it really depends on context for me. What I’m wondering though, is if this is my fault for tweeting that site where you lookup users to see what curse words they are using. If so, my apologies, as I was only using that site for entertainment purposes.
Nope, not your fault! However, I did Google it and used as evidence. According to that site, I’ve only said curse words 3 times… ever!
OMG, that is ridiculous! I try to behave myself for my more conservative followers, but overall, still gotta be me! In a moment of excitement, you said the f-word. (Congrats by the way on your 5K!) In my opinion, F them!!

Thank you! Exactly, I was EXCITED, it happens, it’s what I do, it’s me! Saying “Oh yay!” just didn’t have the same effect, the punch of excitement.
You are making a good point. My tweet or what I say on Facebook in NO WAY affect what I do professionaly in my day to day job. There has to be a line drawn between personal and professional. My job shouldn’t dictate what I can and can not express. I can’t worry if I say the wrong thing I might be fired. My twitter and facebook do not respresent my job, but me.

I just don’t see how you can break the rules if you weren’t notified of said rules ahead of time. I wouldn’t want to work for a company that monitors my every move like that. I’m an Army spouse and the Army isn’t even that bad.

I fail to understand why people get so upset about a curse here and there. I would be much more concerned with the intent of a message, rather than the choice of words. “Fuck yea” is not something I would have a problem with, whereas “fuck you” is something that I might.

Wow first off.. Congrats on the great job with the 5k. I know I would be laying down f bombs all over the place if I did one, probably because I was in so much pain.
I just can’t believe that company! You are better off without them, at least they won’t be stalking your every move to make sure you are not breaking non-existent rules.

Maybe I was justified then… at the start of the race I had a neck cramp that wouldn’t let me turn my head left, and my shins killed the first 2 miles!
All I have to say is: Fuck them!
haha I love it!
First of all, congrats on the 5K! Woot!
Secondly, since you weren’t tweeting on behalf of the organization I don’t see how one single tweet really affected them. I agree with Blondie, Fuck ‘Em!
Okay, even as someone who does not cuss, I am hard pressed to figure out how they could fire you for violating a standard they hadn’t set. Go figure.

I try not to swear, either, but you just accomplished something major for YOU and threw that out there because you were excited! What a way to bring you off your high!

Before I get started …. HUGE CONGRATS ON THE 5K! Whoo hooo! Go you!
Now, as for the “Fuck” … so be it. You were not on paid company time. You were not representing a company. You were not using anyone else’s Twitter account. You were on your own free time, using your own personal account. You owe no one any explanations nor do you have to defend yourself.

haha Lee :) Good to know!
Wow! You know, I have always been very afraid to use the F word on twitter as well. I have used it twice, both times to say that you shouldn’t say it! Social media is very tricky! I also said on twitter that I “hated” the quoters, and got in trouble for hating. Such a lesson in life! molly

HOW unfair is that! They allow weirdo’s to send out pic’s of half naked bodies and I’ve seen a ton more curse words than what you used. That’s a shame.
