Pregnancy Week 5

August 3, 2010

Wednesday August 4th marks the start of the fifth week of pregnancy. It’s so early, and everything is still so vulnerable, it’s actually really scary to be at this stage. I’m nervous that we’ll have another loss, but I’m trying to stay optimistic. It’s hard, it’s an emotional roller coaster right now. Other then emotions running high, I am feeling good. I have had some random waves of nausea, but nothing consistent. A few mild headaches, and of course boobs that HURT!

So during this week:

_____

The neural tube — from which your baby’s brain, spinal cord, nerves, and backbone will sprout — is starting to develop in the top layer, called the ectoderm. This layer will also give rise to her/his skin, hair, nails, mammary and sweat glands, and tooth enamel.

Her/his heart and circulatory system begin to form in the middle layer, or mesoderm. (This week, in fact, his tiny heart begins to divide into chambers and beat and pump blood.) The mesoderm will also form your baby’s muscles, cartilage, bone, and subcutaneous (under skin) tissue.

The third layer, or endoderm, will house his lungs, intestines, and rudimentary urinary system, as well as his thyroid, liver, and pancreas. In the meantime, the primitive placenta and umbilical cord, which deliver nourishment and oxygen to your baby, are already on the job.

Thank you BabyCenter.com for the information!

Wow. It’s a very weird feeling to think that soon, there will be a teeny tiny little heart beating inside of me. They say that the baby is only about the size of a sesame seed. A sesame seed?! Holy moly that’s tiny! It just boggles my mind that something that tiny grows so rapidly, and come out as a newborn infant, and grow into a child, a teenager, and then an adult. It’s just crazy!

My doctor has ordered a third blood test which I am having done today, so once I have the results I will update with those. We are crossing our fingers and sending up prayers for a good high number. If all is well, I will get to schedule my first prenatal appointment, and also an ultrasound! That’s something new to us, with Chubbs we only had our diagnostic at 20-21 weeks, and with this new doctor, he does an early ultrasound for dating purposes, and also the diagnostic. He may even do more throughout the pregnancy (as I’ve been told by the nurse and other patients of his!)! So we will see! Here’s to huge prenatal vitamins and lots of impatient waiting!

Update!!!

hCG level came back…. 4269! That is at 21 days past ovulation. Any experts out there have an opinion? Nurse said it sounded good and would pass it off to the doctor so we can schedule an ultrasound. Is that normal? High?

Congratulations! Those early weeks seem to take forever to go by but soon you will be at the end of the 1st trimester and it’s all (mostly) smooth sailing from there!

Aww congrats , I didn’t know you were having a baby! I’m excited for you, I have to agree with you that it truly is amazing that they start so small and we end up with a little bundle of joy in 9 months. I will keep sending you positive thoughts. Huggs

Do you have your prior HCG numbers? It’s good as long as their doubling every 48 hours or so.

Congrats, btw!
