Preparing Our Garden

April 22, 2010

We are finally getting ready to garden! We headed out today to Lowe’s to gather our wood, nails, and organic potting soil to mix with the soil we already have in the yard. I had thought about doing completely raised beds, with a wood “floor”, but that requires a deep bed with lots of soil, so we decided to just frame the area with wood and use a mix of what we have and bagged soil. Making the beds themselves weren’t very hard at all, that was actually my job. Hubs had to do the digging and tilling!

Once our seeds arrive, we will sow directly in the beds. We will be planting carrots, baby spinach, jalapeno peppers, and peas. In a couple of smaller containers we will be doing cilantro, chives, and rosemary. I can not wait for FRESH baby spinach salads! We also have spaghetti squash and sweet corn to try along the house… should be interesting!

Do you have any gardening tips for me? Can corn grow in southwestern Ohio in a backyard?!

I don’t know anything about gardening either, unless you count planting flowers out front every year lol. I’m sure whatever you choose to plant will be great, not sure about the corn in the backyard because I have never tried but it can’t hurt right?

And I am SO glad I came over here from MomDot because you’re an Ohio girl and I don’t know many Ohio bloggers so it’s awesome that I found one!

Oh, I’m so jealous of your garden! We have to completely tear out our back yard and garden area this summer since the previous owners let it go to crap. Hopefully NEXT summer I can think about a garden. Good luck to you!

I had a veggie garden eons ago… but my allergies attack me when I rub up against the plants, not to say less about the pollens! I still do flowers, but I am a very relaxed style for that, being lots of perennials & bulbs that keep coming back & lots are right in along the grass so if they grow into it, no biggie, naturalized! It is smart to do a raised bed, it will be less pain in the butt/back! I do not think a wood bottomed bed would of been a good idea, it would of held too much water & maybe give the veggies root rot. if you wanted it taller I would of made sure to put a good layer of gravel below the soil. I also would suggest to lay down a good layer of newspaper ( just the print not the glossy pages) as a cheap weed bock before adding the soil too. and you can use shredded newspaper as a mulch in between your plants to keep the weeds down and to help keep the bed from drying out.
sure you should be able to grow corn in Ohio, the thing w/corn is you need several staggered rows for cross pollination, or you won’t have the corn kernels all around the cob!
hope that wasn’t too much into, LOL!!

I love your garden boxes! We did our garden for the first time last year and it was so great. I have to admit my husband did most of it but I was so glad he convinced me we should try. Having the fresh veggies was great! I am pretty sure you can grow corn where you are.
We had someone come talk to my Mommy & Me group about gardening and the biggest tip I have to pass on is to wait until Mother’s Day weekend to plant and then get it done in the next two weeks. He stressed that most plants really don’t like to be cold! Good luck!

We grow corn here in NE Ohio, I bet it would even better there! I’ve been thinking of doing raised beds for awhile. I really like your method,I’m going to jump in,and try it! Look forward to watching your progress!

We are trying a ‘Potato Condo’ this year, but like your beds, instead of a wood floor, are digging the ground.

Hey ladies – also stopping by from MomDot and a shout out to the Ohioans! I’m from Cleveland but we moved down here to the dirty south 2 1/2 years ago. We’re coming back up there Father’s Day weekend to visit family. Can’t wait!

Our garden consists of strawberry plants and onion sets in hanging baskets, basil, dwarf trees, sweet peppers, and a dead tomato plant. good luck!

Congrats on getting your garden started! We planted a few seeds here too.

I think you should be able to get corn to grow, we have a few houses up here in the Cleveland area that grow corn. It looks kind of funny in some places and other places they tried to be decorative with it too. Good luck!
